E-RS™:IPF
The 11 respiratory symptom items comprising the E-RS™:IPF are identical to those comprising the E-RS:COPD, a derivative measure of the 14-item EXAcerbations of COPD Tool (EXACT®).
Content validity was optimized and documented through information and data from
- The literature;
- Qualitative study of 30 patients with IPF.
Tests of the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of E-RS:IPF scores were performed with secondary analyses of an IPF clinical study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier:NCT01629667).
- Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) showed afour-factor solution, indicating four respirator symptom subscales comprise the measure:
- RS-Breathlessness (Items 7, 8,9, 10, and11), IPF-Chest (Items 1, 5, and 6), and IPF-Cough (Item 2), and IPF-Sputum (Items 3 and 4).

- Methods of administration
- To facilitate standardized use, an E-RS: IPF User Manual was created, describing the instrument’s development, intended use, administration procedures, and scoring.
- The eDiary certification program applies to the E-RS:IPF.
Translations
Translations of the parent instrument, the EXACT®, can be used for the ERS™:IPF. However, linguistic interviews in IPF may be necessary. See more information about translations here.
